To assist you in managing your diet and stay healthy, you have to consider what food and drink you must consume. Taking control of what you ingest and how much of it will determine the overall impact of your health and well-being.

Fluid management is very critical in your dialysis treatment. The works of dialysis involves the removal of excess fluid from your blood as prescribed to maintain adequate percentage. Having the exact amount of water is determined on the patient’s health and the type of dialysis the patient is receiving. Patients are encouraged to monitor their total fluid intake and consult with their dietician about what other options or recommendations can be taken in managing your fluid intake.

After consultation and recommendation from your dietician, you should be able to create your own diet plan. It is important that you create a shopping list prior to going to the grocery store for ease.  Your plan should include the following:

  • Be aware of healthy recipes that have lower salt contents;

  • Prepare and if possible pre-cook your meal for the day;

  • Carefully read nutritional facts of the food you are buying;

  • Mix and match your meals to balance nutrition intake;

  • Keep a balanced starchy addition to your meal;

  • Balance your meal with salt-free seasoning and spices
